Benefits of Summer Camp After the Covid-19 Lockdown
May 11, 2021
As summer is quickly approaching, parents may be looking for activities for their children to participate in. After over a year of being cooped up due to the pandemic, kids need summer camp now more than ever. Summer camps bring many benefits to a child’s development and can be a safe activity for them this summer.
Socialization: Although remote learning has allowed children to continue to attend school safely from their own homes, it hasn’t been a substitute for real human interaction and connection. The early years in a child’s life are vital for their social development, so it is more important than ever that children are getting out of the house and meeting new people. Summer camp is all about having fun and making new friends, making it the perfect remedy for the past year of isolation.
Disconnect from Technology: After over a year spent behind a screen at school, screen times are at an all-time high for children. This summer, children need to put their devices down, get outside, and be active. Many summer camp programs spend time outdoors and offer several physical activities for the children to partake in. Summer camps encourage children to get some physical exercise, all while having fun with their fellow campers. It is an excellent alternative to having your child sit in front of the television or tablet for most days over the summer.
Development and Growth: The early years in a child’s life are very formative regarding their social, emotional, and educational development. Summer camp is a great supplement to their school that they attend during the year, incorporating exploring and learning into fun activities. Summer camps can help children explore their interests and learn how to express themselves and be confident.
Mental Health: According to the CDC, “reports suggest that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a negative effect on children’s mental health”. A child’s mental health can have an adverse effect on their overall well-being, but children can be resilient. Summer camps can help get children out of the house and isolation and bring them out of their shells. Encouraging teamwork and collaboration through camp activities and outdoor play brings children a sense of camaraderie and can facilitate long-lasting friendships.
Last year at Les Enfants, we successfully ran a COVID safe summer camp, and we plan to do the same this year! Our campers’ days will be filled with fun activities based on weekly themes, daily sprinkler fun in our spacious playground, special programs and entertainers every week, team-building STEAM activities, and so much more. We will be following all of the CDC guidelines to ensure that all of our campers will be safe while still enjoying camp fun.
