4 Strategies to Make Sure Your Child Stays Safe and Happy

Our early childhood educators recognize the importance of learning basic safety and independence at an early age.
While nothing is completely guaranteed, we recommend the following 4 child safety strategies for you and your family:
- Prevent accidental poisonings at home. Preschoolers especially are still in their exploratory stage, and medicines and cleaning products often look like drinks or candy to them. Ingesting these products can be very dangerous, so make sure to keep them out of your child’s reach at all times. In addition, keep the Poison Control number (1-800-222-1222) nearby at all times.
- Prevent burns in the kitchen. When you are cooking or ironing, be sure to keep your child in another room or somewhere you can keep an eye on them at all times. Additionally, turn pot handles inwards on the stove where they cannot easily be grabbed by curious hands. If your child does get burned, immediately run cold water, rather than ice, over the affected area. In the case of more serious burns, call 911 or your child’s primary medical provider.
- Teach children how to be safe getting on and off the school bus. As soon as your child begins taking the bus to school, remind them that the bus stop is not a place to run around or play, but to calmly wait and look out for passing vehicles. When being picked up or dropped off, your child should not cross the street until the bus driver signals that it is safe to do so.
- Make sure they understand “stranger danger.” Once your child reaches school age, it is important to be wary of potential tricks a stranger with ulterior motives may use to instill trust. For example, you should instruct your child to never accept candy from someone they don’t know. Or, if a stranger pulls up in their car and says that you asked them to give your child a ride home, instruct the child to decline this ride, walk away, and tell a trusted authority figure.
