How Can Your Child Give Back to The Community This Year?
December 23, 2020
- When your child picks a cause that they genuinely care about, they’re more likely to commit to regularly giving back.
- The sooner you teach your child about giving, the better. We recommend starting as early as preschool.

Our early education professionals stress the importance of giving back during the holiday season.
Even though volunteer opportunities this year may be more limited than usual, there are still plenty of ways your children can be generous and give back to their community. We recommend the following:
- Send a Christmas card to a soldier. It’s a sad fact that many of our soldiers won’t be able to spend Christmas with their families this year. Your child may get the chance to bring them joy this Christmas by sending them a nice greeting card. A cool illustration is always a bonus too! Don’t worry about penmanship or artistic skills. It’s the selfless thought that counts.
- Donate to a food bank. Not only are food banks an excellent, COVID-friendly way to give back this holiday season, but it also teaches children the value of appreciating the things they have. Unfortunately, many families don’t know where their next meal will come from, and your child has the chance to make sure they are fed this year. You can still physically volunteer at many food banks, but a drop-off of shelf-stable food is always appreciated if you feel more comfortable doing that!
- Shovel snow or do yardwork for an elderly neighbor. Chances are, you have an elderly neighbor or friend nearby who can’t do snow and yard work as easily as they used to. Deploy your child to help them out in whatever way they can. Older children can shovel snow after a storm or rake leaves, while younger children water plants or collect small branches from the yard.
- Make care packages. Making a care package is a wonderful way to show distant family and friends how much they mean to us. Find out that person’s favorite, shelf-stable treats, and let your children help bake them. Throw in a gift card to their favorite coffee shop or restaurant, and you can even include a photo collage or handwritten card. We guarantee you’ll make someone’s day, even if you can’t be together.
The Christmas season is just as important a time as any forgiving. So, take our recommendations or come up with a cause on your own, and you and your children can make a difference together!
