How to Prepare Your Child for Preschool

July 27, 2022

Starting preschool is a significant milestone for both your child and you. Learning to spend time apart can be difficult but beginning the formal learning journey is exciting too. Here are some tips to help ensure your child’s transition to preschool goes smoothly.

Visit Together
Plan to visit your child’s new school together before their first day. Play on the playground together and explore the classroom. This way, the school will be a familiar place when they start on day one.

Make New Friends
If possible, arrange a playdate with children from your child’s class. This allows them to get to know others before school starts and will help make their new school a little less scary.

Create a New Routine
Following a routine provides your child with opportunities for making decisions and acting responsibly. Having a daily schedule can help ease your child’s transition to the structure of a preschool setting.

Acknowledge Their Feelings
Your child may express nervousness, not wanting to go, or excitement about starting school. Whatever they feel, take time to appreciate what that is.

Encourage Independence
Children who can take care of some of their personal needs tend to do better at the beginning of preschool than children who rely on adults for everything. Support your child in taking care of their individual needs. If they ask for help, try talking them through it rather than doing it all for them. This little bit of independence will help prepare them better for the school year ahead.
